India is witnessing today a large-scale decline in agricultural workforce, a declining growth rate, and a shrinking share in the country’s GDP. This booklet describes the Indian State’s historical and contemporary agricultural policies that have aggravated the current rural agrarian crises. It argues that the agrarian distress and crisis as seen across the country today is a manifestation of ‘anti-peasant’ State policies since independence.
