The dairy industry in India is at a critical juncture. This policy brief Contemporary Crisis in India’s Dairy Sector explores the intricate dynamics driving the challenges faced by millions of small and marginal farmers. The paper delves into the effects of neoliberal agricultural policies, the impact of Covid-19, rising feed costs due to the Russia-Ukraine conflict, and the devastating effects of the Lumpy Skin Disease outbreak. While dairy cooperatives offer some respite, the unorganized sector continues to dominate, leaving many farmers vulnerable to fluctuating market conditions. This timely analysis highlights the urgent need for sustainable reforms to safeguard livelihoods, ensure food security, and protect the backbone of India’s rural economy.
