Singapore Declaration |Resolution on Burma  

(Singapore, 5 November 2007) Over 200 participants from civil society organizations and trade unions from across Southeast Asia and beyond have called upon the leaders of ASEAN to postpone the signing of the ASEAN Charter due to the Burmese junta's recent violent crackdown on peacefulprotests.

At the conclusion of the third ASEAN + Civil Society Conference (ACSC III) held in Singapore from 2-4 November, all participants agreed that the current political crisis in Burma must first be resolved in accordance with basic human rights standards before ASEAN's leaders can sign a Charter for a caring, sharing community"

Stepping up its campaign against the India-USA nuclear deal, the Committee on Independent Foreign Policy organised a public meeting at Mumbai today. Over 1500 people packed into Patkar Hall in South Mumbai to listen to leaders from the Left parties including Communist Party of India (Marxist) General Secretary Prakash Karat and Communist Party of India General Secretary AB Bardhan. The meeting was supported by local trade union chapters of CITU and AITUC, the Girni Kamgar Sangharsh Samiti and the Peace Mumbai network. Former Mumbai High Court Justice Suresh and Former Finance Secretary SP Shukla also spoke.

Faizel Ismail is the head of the delegation to the World Trade Organization of South Africa’s Permanent Mission in Geneva. He has served as chairman of the Committee on Trade and Development of the WTO’s Trade Negotiations Committee. A key player in the Group of 20 and in the Non-Agricultural Market Access (NAMA) negotiations, he is regarded as one of the most articulate defenders of the positions of developing country governments in the WTO negotiations. He talked to Bello at the sidelines of the Global Network’s “Global Dialogue for a Fair Globalization” held in Lima, Peru, Sept. 21-24, 2007.
