Two members of the 50 Years Is Enough Network South Council (an advisory body made up of close allies in the struggles against the IMF and World Bank) have had their lives threatened in the Philippines. The names of Walden Bello (Focus on the Global South) and Lidy Nacpil (Freedom from Debt Coalition & Jubilee South) appeared on what seems to be a “hit-list” of “counter-revolutionaries” in a December publication of the Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP). Two other names on the list were of people who have been killed in the last four years – killings widely presumed to be the work of CPP members.
We wish to express our complete solidarity with both Walden and Lidy, and hope that our friends around the world will do likewise. Below are a statement from the staff of Focus on the Global South, followed by news articles explaining the situation in more detail and a statement from Walden and another person cited on the list, Loretta Ann Robales.
