The first round of negotiations for an EU-Philippines Free Trade Agreement will commence next week (May 23-27) in Brussels, Belgium. A 60-person strong Philippine delegation led by outgoing DTI Secretary Adrian Cristobal, Jr will negotiate on behalf of the Philippines. The EU-PH FTA has been criticised by civil society groups for its ambitious agenda that will imperil peoples rights and national sovereignty. These talks follow the signing last month of another trade agreement with the European Free Trade Area (EFTA) States.

Mr. Den Kamlae, a prominent activist from the Khokyao community, has been reported missing since 16 April 2016. He was last seen at his house before entering the community forest to collect forest products as part of his normal daily activity. This creates grave concern and worry for his family, local activists, and community members.
When we attempted to investigate landholding of the rich, the result was we have been prosecuted and tried in the Court. We were then sentenced to jail and were held liable to pay damages to the rich.
When we declared that land mist belong to those who till it with their labour, the result was we have been summoned for ‘attitude adjustment’.
When we insisted of having the right and access to land and the management of all resources in society, the result was laws have been invoked to mete out measures to forcibly evict us from the land.

Participants of symposium will come from Vietnam, Laos, Thailand, The Philippines, Indonesia, and India, and represent a wide range of ethnic, cultural, religious and vocational backgrounds and perspectives.
