The issue of climate change has come to the forefront and people both in the North and the South have been feeling the devastating effects of global warming. However, the links between the neo-liberal system and the model of over consumption to the climate crisis are not clearly stated.
Focus on the Global South is looking for a Communications Officer to be based in Bangkok, Thailand.
This recruitment comes at a time when Focus is reviewing its communications generally. Focus is therefore looking for a candidate who will work with the Communications team in revamping and reinventing the Focus communications strategy and tools.
SUMMARY OF TASKS
The position of Communications Officer will include the following responsibilities as part of the Communications team:
- Developing and implementing Focus’ communications strategy and plan in accordance with the organization’s over-all goals and objectives.
- Liaising and establishing contacts and working relationships with the media in the Asian region especially and maintain regularly updated records of media contacts
- Writing and disseminating press releases and organizing press conferences and other meetings ( such as media workshops )and interviews with the media
- Assisting in dissemination of Focus publications through various channels with the aim of reaching its target audiences
- Editing Focus articles and materials to ensure they are reader friendly and reaches out to a wider audience
- Keeping the Focus website up to date, being responsible for editorial quality on articles posted on the website, including ensuring summaries are written for video and pdf files that will help inform the website user before downloading
- Ensuring that Focus analysis and materials reach various target audiences through a variety of means including new media such as youtube, facebook and other alternative forms of media and outreach
- Working with Focus allies in ensuring campaign messages reach its intended audiences
QUALIFICATIONS
The candidate should:
- Have a university degree in journalism, communication or a related field with at least 6 years experience working in the field of journalism or communications.
- Have a strong commitment to activism for social change.
- Have excellent analytical and writing skills with the versatility to write for various audiences (general public, media, social movements, government, decision makers, academe, etc)
- Have excellent editorial skills and experience
- Be fluent and able to express his or herself effectively both in written and spoken English
- Have the ability to work under pressure and with minimum supervision
- Be willing to travel regularly especially in Asia
CONDITIONS
Focus offers a competitive salary plus health insurance, and other benefits package.
Two-year renewable contract, to be confirmed after six months of probation.

Water justice, like water, travels in networks: notes on reclaiming public water
An
international seminar of the Reclaiming Public Water Network brought
together participants from more than 30 countries, who shared knowledge
and experiences about how to improve water provision through the
democratization of water management.
The initiative People’s Agenda for Alternative Regionalisms, involves regional alliances such as Hemispheric Social Alliance (Latin America), Southern African People’s Solidarity Network- SAPSN (Southern Africa), Solidarity for Asian People’s Advocacy – SAPA (South East Asia), People’s SAARC (South Asia) as well as organisations and networks in Europe, including Transnational Institute (TNI), that struggle for “Another Europe”. These networks and the organisations part of them, share a strong commitment on the need to RECLAIM the regions, RECREATE the processes of regional integration and ADVANCE people-centered regional alternatives.
